Where the prices come from

Every price here is reported by the retailer to the South Australian fuel price scheme. The scheme publishes what fuel costs right now and nothing else, so FuelSA records every change as it happens and keeps the history.

Fuel retailers in South Australia are required to report their prices to the South Australian Fuel Pricing Information Scheme. FuelSA reads that official feed every ten minutes and stores a row each time a price actually changes, stamped with the moment it took effect at the bowser.

Nothing is estimated, smoothed or reconstructed, and there is no backfill - so the record starts the day collection did, and the site says so wherever that matters.

How to read any of this

Prices are as reported

Retailers must report a change within 30 minutes by law. A price here carries the time it took effect at the bowser, not the time we saw it - so you can always tell how fresh it is.

Daily averages are time-weighted

A price that stood for twenty hours counts twenty times as much as one that stood for one. A plain mean of price changes would make an hour-long spike look like a whole day.

The middle price, not the average

Tables rank on the middle of the market rather than the average, so one misreported price cannot move a whole suburb. Prices under 50¢ are treated as typing errors and left out.

Days are Adelaide days

Every daily figure runs midnight to midnight in local time, daylight saving included - so the 23- and 25-hour changeover days are right rather than approximately right.

History only goes back so far

There is no backfill and no archive to import. Anything needing weeks of history says how much it has so far rather than drawing a chart it cannot support.

Check the board before you fill up

A reported price may not match the sign when you arrive. This is a record of what was reported, not a guarantee of what you will pay.

One record, two apps

The website and the iOS app read the same collected history, so a price you see here is the price you see there. Nothing is estimated or reconstructed to fill a gap between them.

Nothing about you is collected

No account, no advertising, no analytics and no third-party trackers. If you use the map’s locate button, the coordinate is used in your browser to move the map and is never sent to us. Read the privacy policy.

Also on iOS

The same data, with saved stations and a map built for one hand. Free, and it reads the same record this site does.
